Almaty is relatively young city, it is only almost 200 years old. It was founded by Russians as a fortress on its borders with Central Asian khaganats of that time. It used to be called Vernyi (meaning "Faithful" in Russian). Kazakh tribes understanding power of Russian empire of that time and mainly to protect itself from Kokhand empire allied with Russians and let them join most of the territory of modern Kazakhstan. |
